Race interrupted because of an accident on the first lap. The race was restarted with its original distance. Riccardo Paletti died in this accident, his teammate Jarier withdrew from participating in the restart and Lees had no spare car. Pironi, Boesel and Salazar, also involved in the accident, participated in the restart with spare cars.
