Race interrupted because of a multiple crash at the start, involving Pironi, Depailler, Peterson, Hunt, Reutemann, Stuck, Regazzoni, Brambilla, Daly and Lunger. Pironi and Lunger for not having a spare car and Peterson, Stuck and Brambilla with injuries did not participate in the second start. Depailler, Hunt, Reutemann, Regazzoni and Daly used spare cars on the restart, as did Scheckter, who had an accident on the formation lap of the new grid. The race was restarted with a shorter distance (40 of the 52 laps predicted). Andretti and Villeneuve, who finished originally 1st and 2nd places, both had 60 s. time-penalties for jumping the start. Ronnie Peterson died at the hospital the next day after suffering several injuries in the accident.
