Scuderia Centro Sud Italy Maserati 250F Maserati 250F1 L6 2.5 Pirelli
Scuderia Centro Sud had a second entry for the event, (#44) which ended up not materializing. Scotti did not attend. Behra had previously been injured and Maserati signed up both Herrmann and Scarlatti for his place, with better performance in practice defining the replacement, who turned out to be Scarlatti. Gerino Gerini asked the organizers for permission to try to qualify with Piotti’s car from second day of practice on, but permission was eventually denied (he wouldn’t have qualified anyway). Brabham damaged his 2-litre engine car in practice and ended up riding Leston’s car that did not qualify, with the 2-litre engine in place of the original 1.5-litre. Hawthorn and Collins were testing their swapped cars in the last practice, and Hawthorn had also tested the spare car (#0007) and had already found it better than his #0005. Collins ended up having an accident with the #0005 which made Hawthorn participate in the race with the #0007. At grid formation, Bueb’s mechanics hit a curb with his car (#B7) and damaged the gearbox, so he used the spare in race (#B2).
