Matra had entered their new V12 for Beltoise, but withdrew the day before the event as the car was not quite ready. Beltoise ended up driving the Matra V8, which would have been Stewart’s, but Stewart’s hand was injured in an accident in a previous F2 race. Spence died a few days before practice began, as a result of an accident while participating in practice for the Indianapolis 500. Lotus had two entries but only one driver, Hill. Hobbs did not attend the event, as well as Bonnier, who preferred to participate in a race of the Swedish championship, which he was leading. Ickx’s Ferrari was initially given #18, but as this was the number in Bandini’s accident, they preferred to use #21 on their car.
